New Series - Gundam: G no Reconguista

Hello plamo fans! So there's a new Gundam series coming out and if you haven't heard about it by now, you must have been stuck in cryostasis or something. It's called "Gundam: G no Reconguista" - and after seeing some of the promo videos and screenshots, I have to say I'm really excited for this one!

I'm actually looking forward to this more than the second season of Gundam Build Fighters. The story is set in the Regild Century, which is in the distant future of Universal Century, so there will probably be a lot of references to the original UC history. That also means it will be under heavy scrutiny form hardcore UC fans, and I expect there will be heavy discussions once the series airs.

I think the characters look great. They're designed by Kenichi Yoshida, the same guy who did Eureka Seven. They have a very mature vibe about them. As for the storyline, the translation from the official website reads as follows:
"Some time has passed since the end of the Universal Century, a history marked by space colonization and space warfare.
Humanity's prosperity, which ushered in a new era known as Regild Century (R.C.), was believed to endure alongside the global peace.
It is the year R.C.1014.
The Capital Tower is an orbital elevator that rose above the Earth's surface and linked Earth and space. As the conduit of the Photon Battery energy source to the surface, it is regarded as sacred.
Beruri Zenamu is in the middle of training for the Capital Guard (established to protect the Capital Tower), when the tower is attacked by G-Serufu — a highly maneuverable mobile suit with technology that is not from any known country.
Beruri, who joins the battle in the maintenance mobile suit Rekuten, successfully captures the G-Serufu. However, Beruri feels something for the space pirate girl named Aiida Reihanton who piloted the G-Serufu. It is the same feeling he has for G-Serufu, even though he supposedly never seen it before. The G-Serufu, which should only be operable under specific conditions, is somehow started up by Beruri.
The objective of Aiida and the space pirates who attacked the Capital Tower, and the fate followed by Beruri who was chosen by G-Serufu, will lead to truths that will shake the entire Regild Century era."
From the get-go the plot seems like a mishmash of elements pulled from several older series, which is not all that bad if the execution is done well. We'll have to wait and see. A ten-minute clip from the first episode was released recently, and it looks very promising indeed.

G-Reco First 10min Preview by pKjd from DailyMotion

The mecha designs have been getting mixed reviews. I'm already seeing a lot of hate, mostly directed to the very unorthodox ones like this fellow right here...

It reminds me of those robot toys that have a million blinking LEDs and walk and spin 360 degrees at the waist while playing the following sound sequence [bratatatatat-fire!fire!fire!-<car alarm>-bratatatatatat-♫aiyaiyai you're my little butterfly...♫-fire!fire!fire!-bratatatatatatat] . If you live in the Philippines you've probably given one of those to an "inaanak" (godson) at some point.

That has to be the worst in the bunch in my opinion, the rest are pretty great and are already going to be released as kits in the near future.

Then of course there's the lead MS, the G-Serufu (G-Self)...

The design and color scheme reminds me of Exia a lot. I like the G-Serufu, but I really hate how the horns are jutting forwards. If I ever get a kit of this, those horns will be the first to go.

My favorite among the designs released thus far is the Grimoire...

Very cool Ghost in the Shell vibe from this one. Catchy name too. The minute I saw this the ideas immediately started flowing. That torso would make a nice RB-79 Ball escape pod. I could also do one Ma.K style with the head/hatch flipping open to reveal a GI Joe sized pilot inside, you know, just to piss off the gundam mythos fanatics. I call dibs on those build plans.

G no Reconguista is set to air this coming October, and I'm hoping for a lengthy but fluff-free series with a good helping of mecha eye candy. If these sketches are official, we are in for a treat!

Until next time, keep building plamo!
